The future of Hull City head coach Ruben Selles is set to be determined in the next few days as the club look to make a decision on the Spaniard’s future.
Owner Acun Ilicali along with sporting director Jared Dublin, board member Mustapha Yokes and newly-appointed head of recruitment Martin Hodge will travel to Istanbul on Monday for a series of meetings reflecting on what was a disappointing Championship campaign as part of their end-of-season review.
The group will have their first meeting on Tuesday at Ilicali’s Istanbul headquarters, and amongst a flurry of topics, the future of Selles will be discussed with an acceptance that clarity is required as soon as possible.
Selles, who watched Wycombe Wanderers’ 0-0 first leg play-off draw with Charlton Athletic on Sunday afternoon, guided the Tigers to Championship safety last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth. That result, coupled with Luton Town being thrashed at West Brom, meant City survived on goal difference after winning nine of the Spaniard’s 26 league games in charge.
Any decision on whether or not Selles is to move on will not be made by Ilicali alone, with Dublin, Yokes and Hodge having an influence.
While the future of Selles will be a key topic of discussion in the coming days, recruitment will also be high on the agenda. City know they must avoid a repeat of last summer when the bulk of their transfer business was conducted after the final friendly of the summer, ironically against Selles’ Reading side at the SCL Stadium, a game the Tigers lost 2-0 under Tim Walter.
Signing a striker is viewed as imperative and this week’s meetings will also focus on pushing ahead with attempting to secure their key targets.
Meanwhile, the club have been linked with a move for current Eyüpspor manager Arda Turan. It’s understood that the Turkish legend and Ilicali are close friends and have met recently to discuss Turan’s plans moving forward, with him linked to the job at Shakhtar Donetsk. Turan has previously been on Ilicali’s managerial radar at City, but it’s thought any potential move to the MKM Stadium this summer is not currently on the agenda.
