Are you a licker, biter, or nibbler when it comes to savouring your ice cream? According to experts, the way you consume this summer delight could reveal significant aspects of your personality.
Psychologist Jo Hemmings suggests that your ice cream eating style might indicates whether you’re a risk-taker or lean towards caution.
A survey conducted by Nuii ice cream, involving 2,000 ice cream enthusiasts, revealed that most people prefer licking their favourite frozen treat, while a daring four in ten opt for a bold bite. But what does this say about our character traits?
Henry Craven from Nuii remarked: “We all know that ice cream is a favourite treat for many of us but discovering the way the nation eats theirs has caused quite a debate.”
Henry pointed out how a video of Brand Ambassador and Hollywood star Jason Momoa biting into an ice cream sparked widespread discussion. “The reaction inspired us to delve deeper into what your ice cream-eating style might say about your personality,” Henry added.
Following the study, the brand also hit the streets to gather public opinion on the topic. So, what does your ice cream eating style reveal about you?
Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings believes that those who bite straight into their ice cream are typically ‘fearless’, ‘confident’ and ‘impulsive’, seemingly unfazed by the potential brain freeze. The study found that a substantial number of Brits concurred, labelling ice cream biters as ‘impulsive’ (31%), ‘confident’ (29%) and ‘fearless’ (26%).
Jo suggests that ice cream lickers are ‘methodical’ and ‘relaxed’, demonstrating patience and a knack for savouring every moment, potentially revealing a romantic side.
On the other hand, those who nibble and take their time with their ice cream are characterised by Jo as more ‘cautious’, ‘gentle’ and ‘thoughtful’, although they can sometimes appear slightly controlling.

Hemmings explained further: “The ice cream lover’s psyche revolves around pleasure seeking and nostalgia. They will have a sweet tooth, and ice cream is one of the key comfort foods that may help them regulate their emotions.
“They are probably playful, imaginative, and get excited about all celebrations – from kids’ birthday parties to Easter and Christmas. They don’t see ice cream as something just to be eaten in the summer.” In fact, two thirds admitted they enjoy eating ice cream no matter the weather.
Jo also highlighted that the speed at which you consume your ice cream can say a lot about your personality too. According to Jo, quick eaters, who make up a third of adults, are: “likely to be high-energy, impulsive, enthusiastic and impatient. They want that dopamine hit as fast as possible.”
She elaborated: “They may be restless and a bit edgy at times, using fast eating to soothe themselves.”
In contrast, she added: “The slow-savourer is highly intentional and patient. They focus on the full sensory experience of eating ice cream – the texture, the flavour, the smell, the cold comfort.”
Henry Craven of Nuii ice cream commented: “I’m sure some of the traits both Jo and the research link to ring home for some fans of these frozen treats. Regardless of how you eat yours, it’s all about enjoyment.”
Here’s what your ice cream eating habits say about your personality:
If you’re a Biter – You tend to live in the moment, likely an extrovert seeking instant gratification and adrenaline. Perhaps stemming from large family mealtimes where you had to snatch up your share quickly.
If you’re a Licker – Delaying satisfaction may be more your style. Typically more introverted and careful, you find solace in the steady enjoyment of your ice cream, chasing the rewarding dopamine surge that comes from prolonging the treat.
As a Nibbler – You’re adept at managing emotions, though perhaps inclined towards anxiety with a keen focus on details. The ‘cuddle hormone’ oxytocin might be your ally, fostering trust and social connections.
