Championship pundit and broadcaster Don Goodman feels any suggestion of Hull City sacking Ruben Selles would be questionable, especially a year on from the departure of sudden Liam Rosenior.

Goodman, who is a regular on Sky Sports and has covered City throughout the season, believes Selles deserves a chance at showing what he can do with a full pre-season and a summer transfer window, after inheriting a team at the bottom of the league in December following a disastrous start to the season under Tim Walter.

The Spaniard, who arrived from Reading at a crucial juncture of the campaign, guided the struggling Tigers to safety on the final day of the season with his side surviving on goal difference after earning a point at Portsmouth.

Selles’ position is under review after a season which saw the Tigers struggle throughout and though he could yet leave the club, the Valencia-born 41-year-old could also be given the chance to build his squad over the summer and be given a crack at a full Championship campaign.

Should Selles be sacked by owner Acun Ilicali, he would be the third boss in the space of a year to leave the manager’s dugout, following on from Rosenior and German flop Walter. But Goodman feels Ilicali should learn from what he believes was a mistake in sacking a manager now impressing in France with Strasbourg.

“I was taught by my parents to learn from my mistakes. I also brought my own children up in the same way. It’s even better if you can learn from other people’s mistakes,” Goodman told Boylesports.

“The fact is that they only survived relegation by the skin of their teeth because of decisions made by Acun Ilıcalı. Replacing Liam Rosenior was one of the most flabbergasting decisions I can recall, but replacing him with Tim Walter was even more flabbergasting given the car-crash style of football everyone knew he would try to implement. Changing managers frequently is not a route to success. Replacing Ruben Selles would be madness and a bonkers decision.”
