Charlie Hughes has backed the job Ruben Selles has done at Hull City in guiding the Tigers to Championship safety in his six months in charge of the Tigers.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Portsmouth was enough to move City out of the bottom three and to safety on the day and relegate Luton Town to League One.

After arriving in mid-December, Selles took charge of 26 Championship games and claimed 33 points. That performance has City 12th in the league table since the 1-1 draw with Watford, while their defensive record under Selles is the fourth best in the Championship over that period.

Hughes, who was named the club’s Young Player of the Year, has been a key figure under Selles and scored his first goal under the Spaniard at Sheffield Wednesday to win the game 1-0.

Selles’ future remains up in the air at this stage, with owner Acun Ilicali and sporting director Jared Dublin conducting a review of performances across the season. The Spaniard could yet lose his job, but he could also be given the summer to turn City into a side capable of competing at the other end of the table, and Hughes says the players have enjoyed working for the ex-Reading chief.

“Stats don’t lie. I’ve seen a few stats since he’s come in, and what he’s done. I don’t think there’s any debate in that because, like I said, stats don’t lie, and I think I’ve seen them for what he’s done since he’s come in. He’s been great, and I mean the lads have a great relationship with him,” Hughes told Hull Live.

“I don’t read all sorts outside of the training ground, and I don’t read social media. I’ve heard rumours, but listen, all I’ll say is that me and the lads have a great relationship with the manager. Since he’s come in, the lads are grateful for what he’s done for us.

“We don’t see any debate in it. For me and the lads, I think we really get along with him and don’t have any problem here, so there’s no debate for us.”
