Former Hull City boss Peter Taylor has been named Canvey Island’s new manager. The 72-year-old replaces Brad Wellmen, who resigned after The Islanders finished 17th in Isthmian League Premier Division, having been in charge for four years.

A Canvey Island club statement read: “The Board are pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Taylor as First Team Manager. Peter returns to the club where he started his career as a youth team player. Peter has always kept in contact with Canvey and is delighted to be returning.

“Further appointments regarding the Management Team and First Team Squad to be announced in due course.”

Taylor boasts a wealth of experience in the sport, having managed in India and New Zealand and was England caretaker boss for a match in Italy in 2000 when he gave David Beckham the captain’s armband for the first time. As well as having two stints as manager of the England Under-21s team, the former Southend United, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient player has also had managerial spells with the Tigers, Leicester City and Palace.

Taylor wrote his name into City folklore by guiding the club to back-to-back promotions. His four-year reign saw a tired club transformed, with Taylor taking charge of 184 league and cup matches.

“It was a sleeping giant that in the end we were able to wake up,” Taylor told HullLive. “We made everyone realise what the club was capable of. I’ve got no doubts about it, those were my proudest achievements in club football.”

His most recent job in football was as Maldon & Tiptree manager in 2023. Taylor was sacked just three matches into a new season.

Meanwhile, former City manager Phil Brown has left non-league outfit Kidderminster Harriers. Brown took the reins at Aggborough in January 2024 but was unable to save the club from relegation to the National League North.

A third-placed finish in the following campaign booked his side a play-off place, but Kidderminster fell at the first hurdle against Chester last weekend.
